Sami is one the artisans from our Tagua Collection. We asked her a few questions so that you can meet her and know about the effect this source of income has had on her life.
** Your name (nickname).
Samirna Cardozo (Sami).
** When did you start working as an artisan of such items?
I started working at the tagua workshop on 18/09/2001, almost 15 years ago.
** How do you feel when you produce the items?
You have to be very careful when working with tagua. I love the work that I do and it is very fulfilling to do something that other people love, particularly people from outside of Colombia. I am delighted to learn that my work is being appreciated in a country like Japan.
** What has changed since you joined?
I've had very positive changes in my life since I have been working as an artisan with tagua. I've been able to earn a decent living and have been able to pay for an education for my daughter. I've also made great friendships and have learnt a lot.
** What have you done with your family recently?
I recently travelled with my family to our home town in Colombia and we spent several days with our extended family.
** Tell us about a recent moment when you thought to yourself "I'm happy".
A couple of months ago when I saw my daughter attend university for the first time.
